What this noise usually means.
A high-pitched squeal when pressing the brake pedal is most often the wear indicator on the pads — a small metal tab designed to scrape the disc and warn you that the pads are reaching the end of their life.
Common causes.
- Brake pad wear indicatorMetal tab now contacting the disc — replace the pads soon.
- Glazed padsHeat-hardened friction surface; sometimes resolves with gentle bedding-in.
- Surface rust on discsCommon after rain or overnight; usually clears in the first few miles.
- Worn or warped discsAdds vibration through the pedal alongside the squeal.
How serious is it?
Low to medium. A squeal is a warning, not a failure. Ignore it long enough and it turns into the much more serious grinding noise.
Typical UK repair cost.
£80–£550. Pad replacement: £80–£160. Pads and discs together: £180–£340. Belt-related squeals from a slipping cambelt or auxiliary belt: £200–£550.
