Squealing Brakes

Most squealing brakes are warning you, not failing yet. Here’s how to tell the difference.

What this noise usually means.

A high-pitched squeal when pressing the brake pedal is most often the wear indicator on the pads — a small metal tab designed to scrape the disc and warn you that the pads are reaching the end of their life.

Common causes.

  • Brake pad wear indicatorMetal tab now contacting the disc — replace the pads soon.
  • Glazed padsHeat-hardened friction surface; sometimes resolves with gentle bedding-in.
  • Surface rust on discsCommon after rain or overnight; usually clears in the first few miles.
  • Worn or warped discsAdds vibration through the pedal alongside the squeal.

How serious is it?

Low to medium. A squeal is a warning, not a failure. Ignore it long enough and it turns into the much more serious grinding noise.

Can I keep driving?Yes, but not for long. Plan a brake inspection within the next week or two before pads run out completely.

Typical UK repair cost.

£80–£550. Pad replacement: £80–£160. Pads and discs together: £180–£340. Belt-related squeals from a slipping cambelt or auxiliary belt: £200–£550.

Prices are guides only. Individual quotes will vary by make, model, parts and labour rates.

When to contact a garage.

Within 1–2 weeks. Many garages offer a free brake check before booking the work in.
