Clicking Noise When Turning

A sharp clicking under steering load often points to driveshaft components. Here’s what AutoEar checks first.

What this noise usually means.

A clicking or knocking sound when turning the steering wheel — particularly under acceleration, on full lock, or in tight car parks — usually points to the constant velocity (CV) joint on the driven wheels.

Common causes.

  • Worn outer CV jointThe most common cause; clicking gets louder on full lock or when accelerating mid-turn.
  • Damaged CV gaiterA torn rubber boot has allowed grease to escape and dirt to enter, accelerating wear.
  • Wheel bearing wearFailing bearings can also click, although usually with a hum that changes with speed.
  • Worn track rod or ball jointSteering components creating a knock under load rather than a sharp click.

How serious is it?

Medium-high. A failing CV joint can lock unexpectedly, leaving the car immobile. Catch it early and the boot replacement is cheap; catch it late and you’ll need a full driveshaft.

Can I keep driving?Drive cautiously to a garage. Avoid full-lock parking manoeuvres and high motorway speeds. If you can’t reach a garage easily, a mobile mechanic can confirm the diagnosis.

Typical UK repair cost.

£120–£420. CV gaiter replacement: £120–£260. Outer CV joint replacement: £180–£420. Full driveshaft replacement: £280–£550.

Prices are guides only. Individual quotes will vary by make, model, parts and labour rates.

When to contact a garage.

Within the week. The cost gap between a CV boot replacement and a full joint replacement is significant — earlier inspection saves money.
